Laos: Covid-19 precautions to be taken at national school exams


VIENTIANE, July 20 (Vientiane Times/ANN): In line with the precautionary Covid-19 measures, the examination organising committees have increased exam centres with social distancing for the upcoming national school final examinations.

Exam centres for Grade 4 at lower secondary school final exams are expected to increase from 588 centres in 2020 to 650 centres with 4,836 rooms this year, according to the General Education Department, Ministry of Education and Sports. In Vientiane, exam centres will increase from 28 centres in 2020 to 72 this year.

A total of 88,200 Grade 4 students across the country will take their final year exams from August 10-12.

Exam centres for Grade 7 at upper secondary school final exams will increase from 293 centres in 2020 to 328 centres with 3,259 rooms this year, and it increased from 22 centres to 42 in Vientiane.

A total of 58,958 Grade 7 students in upper secondary schools will take their exams from August 17-19. However, the Ministry of Education and Sports will announce any changes to the timetable if the lockdown continues.

In addition, a total of 134,050 Grade 5 students at primary schools nationwide are expected to sit for their final exams this year.

Grade 5 exams will take place from August 3-4, and the tests will be conducted at 1,737 centres with 7,163 rooms. The examination organising committees have also arranged for necessary equipment to prevent Covid-19 infections at exam centres.

They will implement all precautionary measures to ensure the well-being of students and lecturers, to prevent the spread of Covid-19 during exams.

There should be no more than 15 students in one exam room, and everyone must have their temperature checked before entering the room, and in line with the precautionary measures recommended by the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.

More than 280,000 students of state-run and private schools across the country are waiting to take final year exams in primary and secondary sections following disruption to education due to the Covid outbreak.

The Ministry of Education and Sports has asked all schools to prepare for the end of year examinations, while some schools are arranging special classes in key subjects to ensure that students pass the tests. Grade 4 students will be tested for Lao language and literature, maths, natural science, social science, Lao studies, and English. - Vientiane Times/ANN
