VIENTIANE, June 26 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Six new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed around the country on Saturday, and all of the new cases were imported with the capital being free of community transmission, bringing the countrywide total since March last year to 2, 100.
The new infections were discovered after 1, 552 samples were tested for the virus on June 25, the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control told a press briefing.
Leading the press briefing on behalf of the taskforce, Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control of the Ministry of Health, Dr Phonepaseuth Xayamongkhoun, gave an update on the Covid outbreak.
Dr Phonepaseuth reported that the six new cases occurred, Champassak province (3) and Savannakhet province (3) and are believed to be imported.
Meanwhile Vientiane has been recorded with zero new cases for two consecutive days, giving more hopes for authorities to contain the spread of the virus. Almost 2, 000 people have been discharged from various hospitals.
Dr Phonepaseuth urged everyone to act responsibly and to continue to comply with all of the Covid-19 prevention measures and lockdown rules to keep the virus in check.
Although the number of new cases of Covid-19 continues to fall, the government is continuing measures to contain the spread of the virus in target areas of Vientiane.
Some 3, 925 people have been admitted to 43 quarantine centres across the country and samples taken from them are being tested for the virus.
Health officials urge anyone who believes they have come into contact with an infected person to self-isolate for 14 days. - Vientiane Times/ANN
