Heavy rain season in Laos expected until June 14

VIENTIANE, June 12 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Heavy rain and gusting winds will continue throughout Laos until Monday (June 14) and flooding and landslides are possible in all areas of the country, the Meteorology and Hydrology Department has warned.

Phongsaly, Huaphan and Xieng Khuang provinces will have thunderstorms and heavy rain from June 12-14, with temperatures ranging from 18-30C.

In Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang and Xayaboury provinces temperatures will range from 20-32C and there will be thunderstorms and heavy rain from June 12-14, with lighter rain from June 15-17.

Vientiane will have thunderstorms and heavy rain from June 12-14 and light rain from June 15-17. Temperatures will range from 23-33C.

The provinces of Vientiane, Borikhamxay, Khammuan and Savannakhet will have thunderstorms and rain showers from June 12-18 with temperatures ranging from 23-33C.

Champassak, Saravan and Xekong provinces can also expect thunderstorms and rain showers from June 12-18, with temperatures ranging from 23-33C.

Thailand’s Meteorology Department has forecast scattered to fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy rain in provinces close to Laos, namely Loei, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom and Khon Kaen, from June 11-13.

From June 14-17, there will be scattered thundershowers with isolated heavy rain in the east and lower regions, with minimum temperatures of 23-26C and maximums of 30-35C. Winds will be southwesterly with a speed of 10-25 km/hour.

The government advised people should avoid spending time outdoors during thunderstorms and in high winds and stay away from large trees, unsound buildings and billboards.

It added that everyone should be prepared for weather extremes and follow forecasts issued by the Meteorology and Hydrology Department. - Vientiane Times/ANN
