Nine more Covid-19 death, 560 infections in Cambodia as govt lifts night curfew

PHNOM PENH, May 23 (Xinhua): The Ministry of Health on May 23 reported another 560 Covid-19 cases, all but 15 of which were linked to the February 20 community outbreak.

The ministry also reported nine new deaths and 537 recoveries. The death toll now stands at 176.

As of May 23, Cambodia had recorded a total of 25,205 Covid-19 cases with 17,701 recoveries and 176 fatalities.

The Cambodian government also announced that garment workers the majority of latest Covid cases in Preah Sihanouk

Despite the continued rise in new cases, the Phnom Penh Capital Hall announced late Friday that a night curfew in the capital city's low-risk areas of COVID-19 infection was lifted from Saturday.

"All markets, restaurants, food stalls, cafes and soft drink shops are allowed to reopen and to resume dine-in services," Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng said in a statement.

"A ban on alcohol sales in Phnom Penh is also lifted."

However, karaoke parlors, discotheques, beer gardens, massage parlors, casinos, cinemas, art performance venues, museums and sports clubs would remain closed, he said.

Cambodia launched its Covid-19 inoculation drive on Feb 10. So far, 2.22 million out of the 10-million target population have been vaccinated, said health ministry secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine. - Xinhua
