Vietnam wraps up ruling party and states it's ready to host the 35th Asean Congress

HANOI, Oct 9 (Vietnam News/ANN): Vietnam is ready to hold the 37th Asean Summit and related meetings in November in a format suitable to current conditions, said Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Quoc Dung at a virtual Asean Joint Consultative Meeting.

He said that Vietnam, as Asean Chair 2020, has spared no efforts to organise a successful summit and related meetings, showing that a united, confident and firm Asean is overcoming the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Eleven high-level meetings are scheduled to take place on November 13-15, including the 37th Asean Summit and summits between ASEAN and its partners.

A series of related activities will be held on the sidelines of the summit, including the Asean Business and Investment Summit.

At the meeting, participants applauded the progress made in implementing the priorities and initiatives of Asean 2020 as well as initiatives in response to the Covid-19.

They spoke highly of Vietnam as Asean Chair 2020 for proposing and promoting prioritised initiatives during the year, achieving practical results, making an active contribution to the building of the Asean Community and effectively responding to the Covid-19 pandemic.

They agreed to co-ordinate closely to ensure the priorities of 2020, as well as Covid-19 prevention and control plans, will be fulfilled as scheduled.

Earlier the same day, the Asean Coordinating Council Working Group (ACCWG) convened the 10th meeting in the form of a video conference to discuss Timor Leste’s Asean membership application. It was chaired by Deputy Minister Dung.

Meanwhile, the 12th Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) wrapped up its 13th plenary session on Friday after completing all the agenda set earlier.

Vietnam's socio-economic situation in 2020 and the plan for 2021 were discussed during the session.

Attendees of the session worked to complete the draft documents to be submitted to the 13th CPV national congress next year and gave opinions on the personnel plan for the 13th CPVCC.

In his closing remarks, CPVCC General Secretary and Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong said that the CPV and the state should remain vigilant in the fight against COVID-19 while sharpening the focus on policies and measures to restore business and production activities.

The draft documents to be submitted to the upcoming national party congress map out the directions for national development in the 10-year strategic period from 2021 to 2030, along with key tasks and solutions to develop specific areas with much innovation content, according to the news agency.

The committee also voted on a list of nominated candidates for the 13th CPVCC and its inspection commission, with the results being "highly consistent" with the proposal of the political bureau, Trong said in his remarks. - Vietnam News/ANN
