VIENTIANE, Sept 7 (Xinhua): Lao Ministry of Health has urged people countrywide to remain vigilant and help control the spread of dengue fever, as the number of infected cases across the country continues to rise.

According to a report from Laos Ministry of Health on Sunday (Sept 6), almost 6,0000 people have been diagnosed with dengue fever and 11 deaths have been recorded.

The highest number of dengue patients were reported in the Lao capital Vientiane with 1,403, while 690 cases were recorded in Bolikhamxay province, and 611 in Vientiane province, Centre of Information and Education for health under Laos Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The 11 deaths included four in Lao capital Vientiane, two in Bolikhamxay and Khammuan, and one each in Xayaboury, Xieng Khuang and Savannakhet province.

Laos Ministry of Health suggested five simple measures as the most effective method of dengue control which is being practiced by households across the region.

These measures consist of closing and sealing all unused containers, flushing out all water vessels, placing small guppy fish in water jars as these eat mosquito larvae, cleaning areas around homes, and remembering to do these four tasks each week.

According to the World Health Organisation, dengue fever is one of the fastest emerging infections, with Thailand, Laos, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore also seeing high incidence.

The number of cases in the Western Pacific Region has more than doubled over the past 10 years. - Xinhua
