Laos govt urges people to stay vigilant against Covid-19 and dengue

VIENTIANE, Aug 28 (Xinhua): The Laos Ministry of Health on Friday urged people to remain vigilant against the coronavirus, even though no new Covid-19 case has been reported for 13 days.

The National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control has urged authorities and people to remain vigilant and adapt to new normal to prevent the spread of the virus, according to a statement from the ministry.

On Wednesday, a total of 2,117 people entered Laos through international border checkpoint.

The temperature of each person entering Laos was checked and no one showed signs of fever.

According to the report, 2,905 people have been quarantined at 48 accommodation centres across the country.

As of Thursday, Laos has tested 37,741 suspected cases with 22 positive cases, and 21 patients have recovered.

Laos detected its first two Covid-19 cases on March 24.

The dengue problem, however, has been rising and Laos also want their people to be aware of this disease.

A total of 5,427 cases of dengue fever have been recorded across the country since January, according to a report from the Laos Ministry of Health.

The dengue fever has caused nine deaths, the ministry said on Tuesday.

The highest number of dengue patients was reported in the Laos capital Vientiane with 1,269, while 639 cases were recorded in Bolikhamxay province, and 586 in Vientiane province.

The nine deaths included four in Laos capital Vientiane, two in Bolikhamxay, and one each in Khammuan, Xayaboury and Xieng Khuang provinces.

Laos health authorities have urged people to clear potential mosquito breeding sites around their homes and workplaces to help control the spread of the disease. - Xinhua
