MANILA, July 11 (Xinhua): The number of Covid-19 (coronavirus) cases in the Philippines surged to 54,222 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,387 new cases on Saturday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 14,037 after 807 more patients have survived the disease.

The death toll also increased to 1,372 after 12 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH said.

According to the DOH, 439 of the daily reported cases were in Metro Manila, 77 cases in the Central Visayas region in the central Philippines and 871 cases were reported in other parts of the country.

The DOH has warned older people anew to be more careful due to their vulnerability to the disease.

According to the DOH, 57 percent of the country's coronavirus fatalities were aged 60 years old and above. The elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions and high-risk parents are the most vulnerable to the coronavirus, the DOH added.

In the morning, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 rattled Davao del Sur province in the southern Philippines before dawn on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) said.

The institute said the quake, which struck at 2:16 a.m. local time, hit at a depth of 19 km, about 11 km southeast of Kiblawan town.

In a bulletin, the institute said the quake was also felt in the towns of Bansalan and Magsaysay in Davao del Sur Province.

The institute said the quake, which was tectonic in origin, will trigger aftershocks but will not cause damage.
