Singaporean firm launches first 'green-focused' data centre in Indonesia

JAKARTA (The Jakarta Post/ANN): Singapore-based data center provider SpaceDC launched early this month the first "green-focused" data centre in Indonesia, namely JAK2.

The company launched its 25.45-megawatt ID01 data center using MTU gas and diesel systems from London-based engineering company Rolls Royce.

The data centre has a 1.3 power usage effectiveness (PUE), a ratio of the energy it uses to the energy it delivers to computing equipment.

A ratio of 1.0 PUE is considered ideal.

"It is the first green-focused data centre in Indonesia," according to the company's statement on Wednesday (Nov 18).

“With the trend of decarbonisation, new concepts of power supply for data centres are at the forefront," Darren Hawkins, the CEO of SpaceDC, said in the statement.

“There is growing demand for local data centres in Southeast Asia, even more since the crisis."

Rolls Royce supports the facility with three containerized gas and diesel systems. The diesel systems consisted of two MTU gensets in a 40-foot container with an active emission control system called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.

The gas genset, also in a 40-feet container, is installed with a combined heat and power (CHP) application.

The CHP technology generates electricity and captures the heat to provide thermal energy for cooling, allowing energy efficiency.

The MTU gas system is designed specifically to withstand hot and humid conditions, which are necessary for the JAK2 facility.

“Deploying generators in a tropical environment like Indonesia comes with a unique set of challenges, especially for a data centre environment where uptime is absolutely critical, ” said Andreas Görtz, the vice president of power generation at Rolls-Royce.
