KUCHING: PRS president Tan Sri Dr James Masing (pic) has hit out at former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for being a hypocrite by attending the two-day Bersih 4 rally in Kuala Lumpur.

The Sarawak Land Development Minister said Dr Mahathir could not have it both ways, by attending the rally, but denying support for Bersih 2.0.

Masing also said it was during Dr Mahathir's premiership when Sabah's migrant problem started.

"The electoral roll especially in Sabah needs a lot of cleaning in order to allow for genuine Malaysian citizens to vote for the Government of their choice.

"Dr Mahathir is the main culprit who tainted the Sabah electoral roll. Ask him to clean it." Masing said in a statement on Monday.

The former premier told reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday that he went to Bersih 4 to show solidarity but was not a supporter of Bersih 2.0.

"Nothing of the sort; we are here because all of us, whether Malay, Indian, Chinese, Iban or Kadazan, we cannot accept the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib (Tun Razak)," Dr Mahathir told reporters.

On a related matter, Masing said Bersih 4 organisers in Sarawak were "wise" to call off planned activities on Sunday.

Reacting to conflicting news reports that organisers had butted heads with DAP on Saturday over speaking arrangements, Masing said the Opposition party had over-reached by trying to "hijack" a civil rights gathering.

Kuching's Bersih 4 gathering, which was the only one in the country with city council and police permits, came to an abrupt end on Sunday noon.

Members of the organising committee gave different reasons like the lack of a public announcement systems or the presence of children, which was not allowed, for the cancellation.

Others said it was due to DAP's impromptu "ceramah" on Saturday night, which lead to the party issuing a statement on Sunday that was quickly retracted.
