Ukraine cites MH17 in ICJ case

ALMOST three years since the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 on board, no one has been prosecuted or made accountable for the crime.

The proposal to establish an international criminal tribunal did not materialise due to the veto by Russia in the UN Security Council. Russia reasoned that such a tribunal has been proven to be useless in the past and that holding one was expensive as well. Russia also cited doubts over the manner in which the criminal investigation was done and claimed that establishing the tribunal would be a political move against its interests.
