Foul stench emitted from Pengkalan Balak beachfront after thousands of fish found dead

MELAKA: Thousands of fish that were found lifeless along the beachfront of Pengkalan Balak has prompted Kuala Linggi assemblyman Rosli Abdullah to seek an answer whether pollution has caused the incident.

They were found along a 3km stretch of the popular recreational seafront on Sunday(March 27).

Rosli said he has brought up the matter to the Melaka Environment Department and other relevant agencies.

"It was claimed that the incident was caused by sulphur contamination but this allegation needs to be probed," he said.

Beachgoers also reported foul stench emitted from the seafront, stretching from Teluk Gong to the Sungai Tuang coastline.

Fisherman Mohammed Arshad, 76, said the Melaka Fisheries Department had contacted him to get more information on the incident.

"The incident has never happened before and there were two species of fish that were found to be washed to the shore," he said.

He added that many beachgoers had left the site by afternoon after seeing the beachfront filled with fish carcasses.
