Liow: 20 more offences to be added in Kejara list by year end

KUALA LUMPUR: The list of traffic offences under the Demerit Points System (Kejara) will be increased by the end of the year, says Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

The Transport Minister said that about 20 more offences will be added, include overtaking along double lines and driving on the emergency lane.

Liow, in a press conference after witnessing the launch of the 3M Malaysia and Miros partnership road safety campaign at Wisma MCA on Friday, said that the enforcement was not focused on penalties but to save lives.

"We just want our drivers to be careful and help reduce road accidents. That is the main objective. All these penalties are only deterrents and reminders," he said.

He said that there were 7,125 road accident deaths last year and the Government hoped to reduce the accident rate by 10% every year.

Liow also said that the Government wants to include road safety education in schools on top of improved safety for road and vehicle designs.

The Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) which incorporates Kejara and the AES (Automated Enforcement System) was implemented on April 15 this year.
