MACC says will take action against Guan Eng for not apologising

PETALING JAYA: Action will be taken against Lim Guan Eng after he refused to apologise for his allegation that Penang exco member Phee Boon Poh had been illegally detained, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

In a statement on Tuesday, MACC said that the Penang Chief Minister had failed to apologise despite being given time to do so.

“We have unanimously decided to take action against him and will be submitting our decision to the Attorney-General for further action,” said the statement, without elaborating on what action will be taken.

MACC added that while it respected the right of anyone to criticise the commission, it would not tolerate those who make defamatory statements against it.

“We do not play favourites and treat every investigation equally and fairly,” said the statement.

MACC had given Lim 48 hours to issue an apology after he allegedly told reporters on Aug 24 that Phee was illegally detained over investigations into an illegal factory.

Phee, together with factory manager Gan Buck Hee, 70, and his factory director son Edmund Gan Eu Leong, 37, were arrested on Aug 11 over investigations related to an illegal activated carbon filter processing factory in Kampung Sungai Lembu in Bukit Mertajam.

On Aug 14, Penang High Court Judicial Commissioner Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed set aside a five-day remand order issued on Aug 12 against them.
