19 strays culled in location of rabid dog attack

IPOH: The Veterinary Services Department has culled 19 stray dogs in Kuala Sepetang during its ongoing inspection in the area for rabies.

A spokesman said the culling was carried out on Monday during its surveillance within a 1km radius from where two girls in were bitten by a rabid dog earlier this month.

"We have checked some 305 animals and only one pet was vaccinated. We have also conducted an awareness campaign there for 275 villagers," the spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday.

"We have also taken samples from five dogs and sent it to the Veterinary Research Institute for tests," the spokesman added.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir had on Monday declared the Matang sub-district as a rabies infection area.
