GEORGE TOWN: Police issued summonses for over 700 traffic offences after checking about 470 vehicles in an operation in Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway and Bayan Lepas.
Called Ops Tembak Tahan/Mabuk/Lain-Lain Kesalahan (speed trap, drink driving and other offences), it was a joint operation by George Town and Balik Pulau traffic police which began at 11pm on Wednesday.
Three men aged between 17 and 28, believed to be drug addicts, were arrested after a small packet of syabu (methamphetamine) was found in their car.
Northern Zone operations commander Supt Shahrum Hashim said the roadblock was put up on both sides of the expressway near the Penang Bridge interchange by 44 police officers.
“The most common offences were speeding and conversion of vehicles without appro-val,” he said.
