Sabah kicks out ‘beggar’ couple

Tugging atheart strings: A motorist stopping to offer assistance after seeing the couple on the road.

KOTA KINABALU: A couple who has been globe-trotting by begging for accommodation and food has been asked to leave Sabah after police caught up with them on Sunday.

The 56-year-old Jordanian man and his 48-year-old local wife from Kota Belud, agreed to leave Sabah after police detected their antics which were highlighted on social media.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said there was no proof of them committing any offence but the couple had agreed to leave Kota Kinabalu on an AirAsia flight on Sunday.

“We received numerous complaints about this couple who have been causing a nuisance in public. We bought them a one-way ticket to Kuala Lumpur after we caught up with them,” he said.

ACP Chandra said the couple arrived in the city from Kuala Lumpur on May 13, and have been coming up with various tactics to get sympathy from the public.

“From what people have told us, the couple would ask for food and accommodation after telling whoever would believe them some sob story,” he said.

A check on the couple’s passports also shows that they have been travelling to many countries over the years.

According to some Facebook postings, it is learnt that the couple would go on their begging spree with the woman sitting in a wheelchair.

The woman could in fact walk and the wheelchair was only part of their method to trick people.

The couple would also demand to stay at hotels they prefer instead of letting the Good Samaritan choose.

Some hotels have allegedly blacklisted the couple from entering their premises after finding out about their begging activities.
