Man caught with drugs worth RM700,000

GEORGE TOWN: Police arrested a man carrying 10 packets of tea bags and uncovered RM700,000 worth of drugs stuffed inside them in an ambush at a supermarket in Jelutong here.

The drugs, believed to be 10.4kg of syabu, were found packed inside the tea packages. Also seized was a car.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye said the man, 44, is believed to be a member of a syndicate operating in Penang and the Klang Valley.

“An operation was carried out by Bukit Aman’s Narcotics Investigation Department and the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group around Jelutong on Thursday, which led to the arrest of the man at the supermarket.

“Police believe the suspect was going to hand over the bag containing the drugs to another syndicate member at the time of his arrest,” Comm Chuah told a press conference at the Penang police headquarters in Penang Road yesterday.

He said that the suspect has been remanded until Feb 2.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, for trafficking which carries the death penalty.
