FIVE people attempted self-immolation as they were unhappy over not being selected as candidates by a political party in an upcoming council election, Tamil dailies reported.

The two men and three women, who were previously councillors, were told they were dropped when they turned up at the party state headquarters in Tamil Nadu, India.

Subsequently, they staged a protest in front of the building. They poured kerosene over themselves and attempted to start a fire.

The police arrived at the scene and quickly arrested them for disorderly conduct.

> About 50 parents held a protest in front of the Selangor education department on Friday over what they felt was a failure to transfer three teachers accused of various wrongdoings.

Malaysia Nanban reported that several reports had been lodged against the teachers recently.

The Parent-Teacher Association of the school in Klang had also demanded that they be transferred.
