KLANG: The MCA division here has strongly criticised the Election Commission’s (EC) proposed redelineation exercise, saying it will cause further racial segregation among Malaysians.
Division vice-chief Datuk Dr Ching Eu Boon said the division is entirely against the EC’s proposal and urged the commission to keep the existing constituency delineation.
“The proposed redelineation, if implemented in Klang, will put voters of a single race in one place.
“This is a racist and unfair redelineation and Klang MCA totally objects to it,” he said after the divisional annual general meeting here Sunday.
Earlier, party vice-president and also Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong opened the AGM, accompanied by division chief Datuk Teh Kim Poo, division secretary Datuk Seri Lee Pei Wah, division Youth chief Tee Hooi Ling and her deputy Datuk Tan Bok Koon.
Dr Ching noted that the huge surge in the Klang federal seat from 97,252 voters to 141,275 voters under the proposal would make it difficult for local leaders to service the constituency.
“In terms of service delivery alone, the commission should ensure that a situation like this does not arise because it is a huge burden on local leaders to work with limited resources and manpower in such a huge constituency.
“The Pandamaran state seat in Klang is another example, with a voter surge from 27,644 to 59,917,” he added.
Tan also noted that the Chinese must not be seen as “opposition voters” because support from the community does not solely goes to the opposition parties.
“Many Chinese have returned to Barisan in recent years, and I believe more will join them as we remain steadfast to serve and solve their problems,” he said.
In his speech, Lee called on members not to be distracted by the redelineation issue in serving the people and preparing for the next general election.Already a subscriber? Log in
