Parishioners stop attempt to tear down church

A KAJANG Municipal Council contractor incurred the wrath of residents of the former Braemer Estate when his workers tried to tear down a church at night without anyone’s knowledge, Tamil dailies reported.

The council had previously issued a notice to the St Joseph Church, ordering its demolition on Tuesday.

Church caretaker S. Anthony said he saw men with several heavy machines entering the church area on Friday night. When questioned, the men said they had been appointed by the council to carry out the demolition work.

Parishioners quickly gathered in the area to chase the men away.

Anthony said the church had tried to meet the relevant officers in the council last year to discuss the matter but had been turned away.

Sheeluamma, 65, was walking on a beach next to her village around 9pm on Friday when she was attack­ed by about 50 stray dogs.

Hearing her screams, her son tried to chase the dogs away but ended up being attacked. Apparently he survived by jumping into the sea.

Neighbours who heard their cries for help came running and helped chase the dogs away. The victim was sent to the hospital but died.
