Jalaluddin: A total of 607 cops sacked since 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: The bad apples are few but they are quite rotten.

Since 2013, a total of 607 personnel have been fired from the police force while 240 have been suspended for offences such as shirking their duties, corruption and misconduct.

Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) director Comm Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said that 284 of them were let go under Section 4(2)(g) of the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) for shirking their duties.

“This year, we fired 25 personnel,” he said.

Others were also kicked out for defying orders.

Comm Jalaluddin said 38 senior officers were being probed while 301 other personnel were being investigated for drug-related offences, crime, corruption and misconduct. Between 2013 and last month, 257 personnel have been convicted.

Comm Jalaluddin said the police were not only compiling information of misconduct of their personnel from the public but also from non-governmental organisations and agencies in its effort to weed out the bad apples in the force.

He said the department was working closely with agencies including the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).

Between July 2014 and February this year, JIPS has received 677 reports from eight agencies on police personnel misconduct.

“Out of the figure, 409 reports came from the MACC,” he said.
