Father, son killed in Labuan car fire

LABUAN: A father and son were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in exploded and caught fire.

Supt Adzhar Othman told reporters Friday that the charred remains of Yunus Japar, 39, and his five-year-old son Muhamad Darwisy Haiman were found inside the vehicle after fireman managed to put out the flames.

"The victims were heading towards the Chi Hwa kindergarten prior to the noon incident.

"The back of the car exploded first but the vehicle caught fire after the second blast," he said.

According to witnesses, Yunus tried getting out of the burning Proton Gen 2 vehicle but failed.

Passers-by also tried to help the victims but could not do so because the flames were too big.

The bodies of the victims have been taken to hospital for a post mortem.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated.
