Consultant claims trial to insulting Najib on Facebook

KUALA LUMPUR- Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak launches "Sabah and Sarawak Biomass Industry Development Plan: Launchpad for Malaysia as the Premier Biomass Processing Hub in South East Asia" at Banquet Hall, Level 3, Prime Minister's Office at 1230 (0430 GMT)

SEPANG: A consultant claimed trial at the Sessions Court here Thursday to insulting the Prime Minister in a foul-mouthed Facebook rant over the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).

Syarul Ema Rena Abu Samah, 35, was accused of posting an insulting comment on a Facebook profile Ratu Naga on Oct 6 last year, criticising Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and members of parliament for signing the TPPA agreement, saying it amounted to selling out the country.

According to the charge sheet, the comment which had the intent to insult another was picked up by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commissions (MCMC) monitors on Jan 28.

Deputy Public Prosecutor from the MCMC Faizah Mohd Salleh urged the court to set a high bail, between RM3,000 and RM7,000, due to the serious nature of the offence.

Section 233(3) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 carries a maximum of one year jail, a RM50,000 fine, or both.

Syarul Ema Rena, who was unrepresented, plead for lower bail, saying she was only informed of the charges the day before and would not be able to raise much cash for bail.

Sessions judge Aizatul Akmal Maharani set bail at RM7,000, and fixed March 22 for next mention.
