KUALA LUMPUR: The Thaipusam celebration should not be an excuse for road users to flout traffic laws, Kuala Lumpur traffic police investigation and traffic law officer Deputy Supt S. Markandan said.
He said the police would act against those who break the regulations.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, he said several roads would be closed to make way for the chariot procession from the Sri Maha Mariamman temple at Jalan Tun H.S. Lee to Batu Caves.
The roads would be closed and reopened in stages between 10pm tomorrow and Saturday evening for the procession from the Sri Maha Mariamman temple early on Saturday and the return journey from Batu Caves between 4pm on Monday and early Tuesday morning.
The affected roads are Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, Jalan Sultan, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Leboh Ampang, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Jalan Dang Wangi, Sogo shopping complex, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Sri Amar, Jalan Tun Razak (U-turn in front of the Fire and Rescue Department), Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Kovil Hilir, Lorong Kovil Hulu, Jalan Perhentian, Batu 5 and Batu Caves.
DSP Markandan said the roads would be closed in stages tomorrow from 4pm to make way for preparations for the Thaipusam celebration.
He urged road users, including those celebrating Thaipusam, to take note of the road closures and plan their travel accordingly.
