Worst affected states trying to contain the problem

KANGAR: The three states with the highest loss of non-revenue water (NRW) are trying to contain the problem.

State executive councillor in charge of public infrastructure Jafperi Othman said Perlis was taking measures to tackle the problem of 60% NRW a day.

Jafperi said the high NRW in Perlis was also due to the unscheduled water meter reading by the state Public Works Department.

In ALOR SETAR, Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said the state government was aware the state had one of the highest NRW rates and that it was something “not to be proud of”.

“We’ve already discussed this with the Federal Government and if everything goes well, we hope to receive a special allocation to replace our pipes, meters and so on,” he said after the weekly exco meeting in Wisma Darul Aman.

In KOTA BARU, State Infrastruc-ture, Utility and Information Techno-logy Committee chairman Datuk Hanifa Ahmad said Kelantan planned to reduce its NRW from the current 58% to 38% by next year.

He said they spent RM5mil to hire Ranhill Water Services Sdn Bhd to curb the loss of water through the 6,000km of water pipes statewide.

Hanifa said state water supply company Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd was assisting Ranhill in its efforts.
