JOHOR BARU: The art of Chinese calligraphy has become popular among the younger generation with many turning the ancient craft into professional teaching jobs.

The Calligraphy Society of Malaysia Johor Baru chairman Yong Kim Jung said the art was no longer just a hobby for older people as the younger generation have become more interested in Chinese calligraphy.

He said besides learning in school, Chinese calligraphy classes was taught by Mandarin teachers after working hours to earn extra money until some five years ago.

“Times have changed now and there are a lot of young adults, especially fresh graduates, who have turned Chinese calligraphy into full-time jobs by teaching it to working adults and school students.

“This is a popular choice for Kuala Lumpur folk as many have set up their own learning centres to teach the 3,000-year-old art with the trend catching on in Johor as well,” he said when met at the society’s centre here yesterday.

He said many might think that the art is dying with time but it is getting more popular among the youngsters as information about the art was now more accessible via the Internet.

Yong, who has more than 20 years in Chinese calligraphy teaching experience, said the society’s Johor Baru centre in Taman Pelangi Indah here was the only one in the country to have comprehensive information on the art.

“It is also the only centre dedicated to activities, talks and exhibitions about the art and we have books and calligraphy material dating back 100 years too,” he said.

He added that Chinese calligraphy might seem like a few simple brushstrokes but a lot of knowledge and interpretation goes behind each character and the way each stroke is written.
