It was an unforgettable job for Uber driver Fredoline Lunsin when his passenger told him she was about to deliver a baby in the back of his car last Saturday in Kota Kinabalu.
"She complained of a stomach ache and when I looked behind, I was shocked to see the baby's head coming out," said the 31-year-old man.
During the 8pm incident, the pregnant woman and two family members had requested for an Uber to go to Hospital Queen Elizabeth (HQE) 1.
Fredoline said he did not notice the imminent arrival of the baby when he picked up the three passengers outside of Kompleks Megalong in Penampang.
Six minutes later, the woman said she was in pain and Fredoline quickly sped to the hospital.
"The baby was already born when we arrived at the hospital. The young mother and baby were then taken into the ward by the nurses," he said.
Tragically, the baby died a few hours later at 1am Sunday due to lack of oxygen.
>Rapid increase in divorce cases among Terengganu's senior citizens
The number of divorces in Terengganu among couples aged 60 and above has increased over the last five years.
This trend was observed following an increase in number of senior couples attending marriage counselling by the state Terengganu Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT).
According to Kuala Terengganu JHEAT officer, Mohd Ariffin Jusoh, one of the common reasons cited was most couples put divorce on hold until the golden years because they had wanted to wait for the children to grow up.
Many have cited prolonged incompatibility and the lack of a desire to stay under the same roof, while some decided to live independently away from their ex-spouses.
