Shah Alam hypermarket shuts for clean-up after rat videos

A HYPERMARKET in Shah Alam has shut its doors for a thorough cleaning after videos of a rat running around its bakery section went viral two days ago.

The two videos, both less than 30 seconds long, were posted by Facebook user Alia Ismail on July 16, after 10pm.

It generated 24,000 shares and over 9,000 comments.

Alia reported the incident to the Selangor Health Department and has been updating netizens on the swift actions taken by the store since Tuesday morning.

When contacted, a spokesman for the hypermarket apologised for the incident.

"Food safety and quality are our utmost priority. We take all complaints seriously.

"We would like to reassure all our customers that this is an isolated incident, and we have taken immediate action to address this issue, including destroying all the bakery items on display.’

The spokesman said all its stores went through routine pest-control maintenance.

The Shah Alam store was closed temporarily at 7.30pm yesterday (July 17) for rectification work to prevent future incidents.

It will resume operations at noon tomorrow.
