Man held for taking upskirt pictures

Busted: The suspect being restrained by the boyfriend and bystanders before he was handed over to the police at Mid Valley Megamall.

KUALA LUMPUR: An alleged serial pervert’s luck ran out when he was caught just seconds after he took an upskirt photograph and video of a woman at a shopping mall.

In the 6.10pm incident, the 31-year-old man was caught in the act by the 21-year-old student’s boyfriend, who was standing in front of him on an escalator at the Mid Valley Megamall here on Saturday.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Sharul Othman Mansor said the three of them were on the way to the second floor when the boyfriend saw the man whipping out his handphone and placing the gadget between the girl’s legs.

“The couple were in front of the suspect, who didn’t realise that the woman’s boyfriend had spotted him photographing his girlfriend,” he said.

ACP Sharul said the boyfriend then confronted him when they reached the second floor.

“He panicked and told the boyfriend that he would delete the image in return for being released,” he said.

The boyfriend refused and snatched the handphone from the suspect before handing him over to the police with a security guard’s help.

“When we checked his handphone, we found a lot of upskirt photographs and videos of other women, including those of the interior design student.

“However, we did not find any previous cases involving the man,” said ACP Sharul.

The suspect, in remand until tomorrow, is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting the modesty of a woman.
