AirAsia X denies making emergency landing

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia X has denied that one of its planes made an emergency landing in Melbourne Tuesday, clarifying that its flight D7223 from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur made the diversion as a precautionary measure.

"AirAsia X would like to confirm that flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur was diverted to Melbourne due to a technical issue.

"The diversion is in compliance with all international aviation safety guidelines and landed safely at 1400hrs (GMT +11) in Melbourne," said the airline in a statement Tuesday.

"Upon completion of all necessary safety inspections, the said aircraft departed Melbourne at 1713hrs (GMT +11) and is expected to arrive into Kuala Lumpur at 10.21pm (local time)," said AirAsia X.

The plane, listed on tracking websites as an Airbus A330, left Sydney en route to Kuala Lumpur but turned back and landed in the southern Australian city of Melbourne.
