KOTA KINABALU: Five men - three illegal immigrants and two locals - have been detained in relation to the shooting spree in and around Kota Kinabalu on Jan 10.
The three immigrants were remanded while the two locals were later released. All five were in the 30s.
In announcing their breakthrough in the investigation into the Sabah shooting spree, Sabah Commissioner of Police Datuk Hamza Taib said an airgun was also seized following the arrest of the five men.
However, he declined to give background of the five although sources said that three of them were Filipinos.
Police had initially suspected the shootings at 46 premises in and around Kota Kinabalu was the work of budak nakal (naughty boys).
Between 11.30pm on Jan 10 until 5am the next day, six men in three vehicles went on a drive-by shooting spree.
Glass panes and glass doors of hotels, shopping malls, banks and fast-food outlets were shattered or dotted with single bullet holes during the one-hour vandalism.
The men suspected of the shooting were caught on closed-circuit television footage, police had said.
