THIS Deepavali, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur is out to showcase the skills of their local chefs with the best of Indian cuisine in the Festival of Lights promotion at Mosaic restaurant.

Under the command of experienced junior sous chef Yogeswarra Rao, Mosaic is featuring a variety of delectable Indian dishes alongside their usual line-up of Oriental and Western dishes.

“One of the unique dishes that can be found in the Indian section is the Rawa Jingga. This is a special prawn dish that is deep fried tempura style in semolina flour,” said Rao.

Another of the highlights of the buffet, according to Rao, is the Ajwaini Macchi Curry. I had the privilege of sampling this fish dish, which is cooked in freshly ground spices flavoured with carom seeds.

Another prawn dish that I thought deserved a special mention is the Jhinga Achari, which is smoked king prawn marinated in yoghurt and mild mango pickle.

“The prawns are actually marinated and smoked in a tandoori oven overnight before cooking,” said Rao.

Diners should also give the Nandu Rassem a try. This South Indian specialty is a soup made from crab stock and various spices, cooked over several hours. The result is something with a broth-like consistency but a creamy, slightly sour taste.

And no Indian feast would be complete without traditional Indian desserts such as Gulab Jamun, Rasmalai and Pall Payasam, notorious for being extremely sweet.

The reason for this, according to Rao, is that the sweetness is believed to counter the spicy dishes that are typical of traditional Indian cuisine.

Besides the array of Indian dishes, Mosaic has a wide variety of Oriental and Western food to choose from.

Diners can check out the various appetisers, the mixed grill, Oriental section, noodle section, sushi and seafood on ice as well as the various cakes and desserts. Mosaic also has a special counter where diners can order several kinds of coffee.

The Festival of Lights buffet promotion at Mosaic restaurant, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur began on Oct 30 and is only available until Nov 10.

The buffet is available for lunch at RM98++ per person, and dinner at RM118++ per person from Sundays to Thursdays and RM138++ per person on Fridays and Saturdays.
