Hockey World Cup: Malaysia wilt against South Africa

BHUBANESWAR: It looks like the heartbreak of the crossover loss to Spain has not settled yet, after Malaysia were thrashed 6-3 by South Africa in the ninth-16th classification stage match of the Hockey World Cup at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela on Thursday (Jan 26).

The South Africans were fast and imperious in the four quarters they played, like a side looking to finish in a respectable position.

Their goals were scored by Bradley Sherwood (sixth and 56th minutes), Guy Morgan (16th), Nqobile Ntuli (25th), Keenan Horne (42nd), and Mustaphaa Cassiem (43rd).

The only light for Malaysia was Razie Rahim, who scored both goals in the 34th and 45th minutes to increase his World Cup goal tally to four goals.

Firhan Ashaari scored the other goal in the 57th minute.

Malaysia will face either host India or Japan in the 13th-16th classification match at the Birsa Munda Stadium on Jan 28.
