Export of timber, timber products to hit RM23bil in 2021, says MPIC
VIENTIANE, Feb 8 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Although the Prime Minister’s Order relating to control of the timber industry is being strictly enforced, illegal logging continues to be of great concern although it has declined in recent years.
Malaysia recognises the importance of managing its natural resources intelligently, which includes the conservation of flora and fauna. Conserving the nation’s richly biodiverse forests and its ecosystem is a vital focus for the future, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030.
It has been 29 years since the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) started its operations, but it remains ever true and passionate to its vision of being the lead organisation that develops the Malaysian timber industry into a world leader in the manufacture and trade of timber products.
WHILE the Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly affected every industry, Malaysia remains one of the world’s top suppliers of timber and timber products, the raw materials of which are sourced from either sustainable or legal sources to meet ever-increasing global demand.
THE issue of raw material shortage is a major trouble facing the timber industry, but industry players are working hand-in-hand with the government to address the situation - a vital step forward, as plywood products were the second largest contributor (RM3.4bil) to Malaysia’s RM22.5bil wood-based products export in 2019.
THE building and construction industry in the country is still going strong, but there is still much room for growth in terms of the usage of timber - certified or otherwise - in development projects, despite its natural and aesthetic benefits.
Failure to comply may result in severe consequences
