Parental vigilance is the price of safe holidays

JOHOR BARU: Authorities have urged parents to keep a close watch on their children now that the school holidays have arrived.

Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Siti Rohani Nadir said parents who are taking advantage of the one-week holiday to bring their children out for some quality bonding time should remain vigilant.

“They will definitely want to take their children to places such as beaches, waterfalls and rivers to spend some time together during this school holiday.

“With this in mind, the department is urging parents to always be vigilant of their surroundings to make sure that their children always remain safe,” she said when contacted yesterday.

Siti Rohani added that if parents want to take their children for outdoor activities near water bodies, they should always check the weather forecast.

She also said that if heavy rainfall occurs near their destination, it is best that they postpone the activity.

“In the last few days, many parts of Johor have been experiencing downpours for long hours. This could lead to strong waves and currents at beaches and rivers.

“Always look out for signs, such as red flags placed by authorities at beaches where it is not safe even if they are good swimmers,” she added.

For parents wanting to take their children on a long trips, Siti Rohani said parents should make sure their vehicles are in good condition.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat suggested parents enjoy constructive activities with their children during the holidays.

“Parents should use this period to fill their children’s schedule with activities that are good and beneficial to their growth, to avoid them being bored at home.

“This is to make sure that children, in particular teenagers, are not involved in unhealthy social activities such as loitering at shopping malls or taking part in illegal racing,” he added.

ACP Raub said parents should also get to know their children’s friends to make sure they are not influenced by bad company.

“If their child wants to go out with his or her friends, parents must also make sure they know where the children are headed, who they want to meet, and what time they will be home.

“They should also make sure their children are always contactable to ensure their safety while out with their friends,” he added.
