MMEA detains sand-laden vessel for anchoring in prohibited area

PORT KLANG: A vessel carrying sand has been detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for anchoring in a prohibited area near Pulau Indah here.

Selangor MMEA director Maritime Kpt Siva Kumar Vengadasalam said the vessel was detected at around 2.30pm on Monday (Sept 5) just half a nautical mile south-east of Sungai Kembung, Pulau Indah.

"Checks revealed the vessel committed an offence under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance for anchoring at a prohibited area and failing to inform the Marine Department director.

"The vessel was operated by nine Indonesians and a Chinese national who had valid identification documents," he said in a statement.

He said the ship captain failed to produce any documents allowing him to anchor there.

"This is an offence under Section 491B (1) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.

"A detention order has been issued on the vessel while its captain and assistant engineer have been taken to the Selangor MMEA headquarters for further action," he said.

Those with information on suspicious activities or emergencies at sea to contact the Selangor MMEA operations centre at 03-3176 0627 or MERS 999 for immediate action.
