Over 1,000 housing units from three PPRs to be built within two years, says Johor exco member

KULAI: Three new People's Housing Projects (PPRs) will be built in the state starting September this year that will offer around 1,100 housing units when completed, says a Johor exco member.

"The projects are PPR Sembrong, PPR Tenggara and PPR Pengerang, and will be completed within two years," said Johor Housing and Local Government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.

"PPR Sembrong and PPR Tenggara are landed housing units, with each project offering 400 units, while PPR Pengerang is a strata building with 300 units that are built under the Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Programme (PPAM).

"PPR Tenggara is expected to be completed by next year, while PPR Sembrong and PPR Pengerang will be completed in 2024," he said when met by reporters after launching the Women Inspiring Knowledge (WINS) programme at IOI Mall here on Saturday (Aug 27).

The projects are aimed at helping those in the lower income or the B40 families and civil servants to get their homes through rental from the government, he said.

"PPR housing units are designed to help poor families rent government-owned homes at an affordable price while at the same time, helping them accumulate enough financial capability to buy an affordable home of their own.

"Once they have that financial strength, they can move out to make room for others who might need these homes," he said, adding that the state government has also requested a PPR to be developed in Larkin, Johor Baru.

The request was made during a recent meeting with the Housing and Local Government Ministry, he said.

"We have given the ministry two options - either to build a five-storey building with 334 units or an 18-storey building with 684 units," he said, adding that the project will be built on 3.6ha of land.

Mohd Jafni, who is also the Bukit Permai assemblyman, said the Johor Affordable Homes project (better known as Rumah Mampu Milik Johor or RMMJ) in Bandar Putra here has been completed with the open balloting process to start at the end of this year.

"The project is located near Kampung Pertanian, and has 306 units that have been completed," he said.
