MIRI: Incessant rain has caused major landslides in three different districts throughout Sarawak on Tuesday morning (Dec 31).
The areas of Kpg Rayu in Kuching district, Jalan Matang Wildlife Centre in Matang sub-district and Jalan Samarakan-Bintulu saw hill-slope erosion that brought down tonnes of earth down on roads.
The State Disaster Relief Management Committee and Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department both flashed these landslide alerts in their latest updates.
Committee secretariat Major Ismail Mahedin said various agencies, like Bomba and Civil Defence Units and road works contractors, have been informed of these cases.
"These landslides were caused by incessant rain today and last night.
"Operations to monitor these affected areas are in place. The relevant agencies and road contractors are dealing with the situation on the sites.
"Residents are told to be on the alert at all times," he said.
The landslides have cut off the road-links to villages in the vicinity.
Sarawak is still facing an onslaught from the Landas season, the equivalent of the monsoon in the Peninsula.
