KOTA KINABALU: Three people were killed after two vehicles collided on the Lahad Datu-Sandakan road on Thursday (April 4) morning.
The deceased, Chong Shu Fah, 39, Chong Soo Feh, 46 and Chong Yee Fai, 15, were in one of the vehicles headed to Lahad Datu from Sandakan while the other vehicle with two people in it were coming from the opposite direction.
It is learnt that one of the vehicles was trying to overtake another when the collision occurred at about 6.15am.
Lahad Datu police chief Asst Comm Nasri Mansor said the trio is believed to have died on the spot while the two in the other vehicle, a 35-year-old woman and her two-year-old son, escaped with minor injuries.
"The accident happened on a hilly and windy road. We are investigating this case under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving," he said.
ACP Nasri said the deceased were taken to the Lahad Datu Hospital for post-mortem while the mother and son received outpatient treatment.
