Ismail Kassim names eight others for Perlis MB post but excludes himself

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Ismail Kassim (pic) has named eight other Barisan Nasional assemblymen who can be the Perlis Mentri Besar and has excluded himself for the post.

The Tambun Tulang assemblyman urged the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail to consider the candidates for the benefit and welfare of the Rakyat.

"We plead to Tuanku to reconsider for the sake of Perlis.

"Give (the eight others a chance), as long as it's not Ismail Kassim or (Datuk Seri) Azlan Man," he said in press conference late Thursday.

Ismail said he was proposing the eight Barisan assemblymen as he did not want to be accused of being power hungry.

He added that the question of him being a "puppet" should not arise as the Sultan "does not know him".

"I have been a chairman of some Government agencies and also a chairman for a (Federal) commission, appointed by the then Agong.

"I have also withdrawn myself as a candidate so there is no issue that my strings are being pulled by my brother (Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim)," he added.

Ismail had once served as the chairman for the Water Services Commission (SPAN).

Earlier, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said he did not want to appoint a mentri besar, who would become a "puppet" controlled by "external forces".

Asked why Ismail and the other assemblymen did not attend the swearing in ceremony on Thursday morning, Ismail said they had prior plans to meet acting Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on this issue which could not be cancelled.

Ismail and the other assemblymen felt that Azlan lacked political leadership.

He also alleged that Azlan was unwilling to accept opinions and feedback from people.

Earlier Thursday, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin criticised state Barisan representatives for playing power politics instead of serving the Rakyat.

It was reported that Perlis Barisan expressed support for Ismail to be Mentri Besar, but the Ruler appointed incumbent Azlan, declaring that he had performed in the previous term and was willing to serve the Rakyat.
