Flood prevention tops councillors’ agenda in Ipoh

SHE may be the oldest Ipoh city councillor, but Norul Huda Ahmad Nator has plenty of fresh ideas to turn the city into a better place to live in.

“My focus is on flood preparation. We have to ensure proper drainage and barriers are in place to prevent flash floods from affecting homes,” said the 65-year-old who is returning as city councillor for another term.

Norul Huda also planned to set up a reading centre for children aged six to seven in the B40 group.

“Based on my research, many children in this age group are not able to read properly.

“Perhaps it is because they grew up during the Covid-19 pandemic and could not attend preschool,” she said.

Norul Huda also plans to focus on the well-being of single mothers, especially those from the B40 community as they were struggling to raise their children while working full-time job.

“I am also looking into ways to help children with disabilities (OKU) by providing them with better facilities.

“Ipoh has a few good public parks but not many are OKU-friendly,” she told StarMetro after the swearing-in ceremony of 24 city councillors at the Ipoh City Council (MBI) headquarters.

The councillors - 11 from DAP, six from PKR, five from Umno and two from Amanah - will serve for a year, between Feb 16 and Feb 15 next year.

Among those returning as city councillors are Datuk Mazlan Abd Rahman, Datuk Azizulkama Abd Aziz, Datuk Ahmad Hariri Kamarudin and Norul Huda (all from Umno), as well as Wong Kar Keat and Lee Tze Hoo from DAP.

The youngest councillor is 26-year-old Lam Yew Tect from DAP.

Lam, who was the special officer for Canning assemblyman Jenny Choy Tsi Jen, said his priority was improving the city’s facilities.

“My top priority is to ensure there are no clogged drains as this can cause flash floods in Ipoh.

“MBI has done a great job as a city council and as a new councillor, I will do my best,” he said.

Other councillors appointed are Basri Mohamad Nor, Lim Chee Aun, Ahmad Fariq Walit Ahmad Puad, Tan Seong Peng, Ng Haen Vee, K. Sivam, Chen Jian Cong, RP Lawrence, Tang Cheng Wei, Norhayati Sani, Ahmad Khair Faizal Yahaya, Mohamed Helmi Mohamed Fuzi, Zuraidah Zakaria, Chung Cum Cheong, S. Logiswary, Faidz Ismail and Syamsul Effendy Abd Rahim.
