Rumah Bantan longhouse located deep in Betong district in southern Sarawak affected by hillslope erosion.

MIRI: Already hit hard by the Covid-19 outbreak, some parts of Sarawak are now facing more woes in the form of heavy rain that caused hillslope erosions.

Two major landslips have been reported due to heavy rain in the central and southern districts.

Longhouse settlement Rumah Bantan located in Ulu Layar, deep in the Betong district in southern Sarawak, suffered structural damage due to an 8.30am landslide on Friday.

The longhouse is located on a hill overlooking Sungai Langit.

Betong Fire and Rescue Department deployed teams to the site after being alerted about the incident.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, in its latest update, said Betong was the nearest town from the longhouse and that the extent of the damage was still being assessed.

At a separate location deep in the Kanowit district in central Sarawak, hillslope failure saw Rumah Anyong suffering partial collapse.

The 10pm incident on Thursday night saw heavy rain washing away the foundation of three housing units.

Rumah Anyong has 33 residential quarters built next to each other.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said teams from the Kanowit department were helping to mitigate slope failures to prevent further landslides.

No one was injured in the two separate landslide incidents. — By STEPHEN THEN
