South-East Asia experienced 29 disasters impacting several nations last week, says AHA centre

ASEAN (Bernama): The South-East Asia region experienced 29 disaster events affecting Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam last week, according to the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre).

In its weekly update report, the AHA Centre noted that Indonesia faced floods, landslides, and drought in various regions, while Malaysia reported flooding in Kedah and Perlis.

The Philippines experienced flooding in several regions and a corrected magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Davao Occidental, as reported by the Philippine seismology agency.

The country’s disaster coordinating council recorded 101 aftershocks by Nov 20, with reported impacts including 12,900 individuals affected, nine fatalities, and 15 injuries.

"Damages encompassed 826 houses, 16 road sections, 5 bridges, and 118 infrastructure and public facilities, prompting relevant government agencies to provide US$209,400 worth of food items and financial assistance to the affected communities,” the AHC Centre noted.

In Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported strong winds and flooding in multiple provinces, including Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani, while Vietnam witnessed flooding, landslides, storms, and winds in the central region.

In the past week, the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre reported moderate to high seven-day average rainfall in various regions due to the combined effects of a shear line and the development of a low-pressure area. - Bernama
