BAM: Let Chong Wei have his say

PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will not speculate on the future of Lee Chong Wei until they hear from the former world No. 1 himself.

BAM president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria (pic) said they will meet the 36-year-old within two weeks to discuss his future.

Norza was also quick to point out that the agenda may not be necessarily about Chong Wei’s widely speculated retirement.

The three-time Olympic silver medallist has not been training since late April.

“After the Raya break, we’re going to sit down with Chong Wei for a discussion about the options available.

“But we’ve not decided on the date yet, it could be as early as next week or the week after.

“He has not hinted anything to us, so let’s see what he has to say. If he doesn’t hang up his racquet, then he’s certainly going to play on.

“Whatever decision he makes, we will support him fully.”

Chong Wei has repeatedly stressed that his health is the main priority. However, the signs of a possible retirement are imminent.

Even BAM’s men’s singles head coach Datuk Misbun Sidek has excluded him from his plan for next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games.
