Shot in the arm for SMEs

Prime Minister, Dato Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak with Executive Chairman of Alibaba Jack Ma launch Worlds First Digital Free Trade Zone at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur. FAIHAN GHANI/The Star.

THE Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ) launched recently by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak together with Jack Ma of Alibaba Group (pic) is a boost for Malaysian SMEs.

The emphasis of the DFTZ is contingent on the intent to promote the export capabilities of the SMEs in the digital marketplace. In principle, access to this new channel of trade would enable SMEs to tap a wider and more sizeable market. Furthermore, the cost of doing business would be less prohibitive and the competitive advantage of bigger companies could be mitigated. Thus, no one can deny that the intent is truly laudable.
