Man's girlfriend texts 'I love you', so wife stabs him

SINGAPORE: An administrator was in the bedroom with her husband when he received an audio message from his girlfriend saying: "I love you."

Muhammmad Yasser Abdul Shukor responded in a similar fashion by telling the woman that he loved her.

Enraged, his wife, Nur Fairuzana Ahmad, 30, snatched his phone away. Yasser struggled and took his phone back, pushing Fairuzana onto the bed in the process.

She went out of the room, and returned with a knife. She started shouting at him and used the knife to stab him in the chest. The victim grabbed her hand, causing her to drop the knife.

Yasser picked up the knife and threw it out of the window before calling the police.

Fairuzana was arrested and taken to the Institute of Mental Health for psychiatric assessment. She was diagnosed with "adjustment disorder with a recent acute situational reaction".

The couple have been married for about 14 years and have two children. They are going through a divorce.

On Monday (Oct 16), Fairuzana was sentenced by Community Court judge May Mesenas to six weeks' jail for causing hurt to Yasser at their home in Punggol on April 17, 2016.

Fairuzana's lawyer Vigneesh Nainar said in his mitigation plea that his client married when she was 16 and the relationship started to break down in January 2016 when he told her that he wished to marry his girlfriend, whom he had met in the Philippines.

Fairuzana was devastated, and became confused and depressed, he said.

He said that Yasser had physically abused Fairuzana throughout her marriage, and that this had escalated particularly in the first quarter of last year.

Police had been called to their home on numerous occasions, he said, but Fairuzana stayed in the marriage and continued to love him despite his violence.

Fairuzana, who has a personal protection order against her husband, was remorseful and deeply regretted that her actions had affected her relationship with her children, said Vigneesh.

She could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000 for causing hurt. - The Straits Times/Asia News Network
