Dead porpoise found on Bakam beach in Sarawak

MIRI: The carcass of a porpoise was washed ashore at Bakam beach fronting the South China Sea about 30km south of Miri city on Thursday (Oct 24) morning.

Villagers claimed that the sea creature - a relative of the dolphin - was already dead when it was found around 6am on the sandy beach.

They claimed the porpoise was swept ashore due to strong waves that had bashed the coastal seas off northern Sarawak over the past day.

Sarawak Forestry Corporation chief executive officer Zolkipli Mohamad Aton, when asked, said his ground officers are trying to locate the villagers.

He said his unit will find out the exact cause of the death of the porpoise, which is a protected wildlife.
