Spidey fans come slinging in to town

Petaling Jaya: Spider-Man: Homecoming which debuted in theatres has brought the friendly neighbourhood superhero to eCurve shopping centre.

It was part of mmCineplexes at eCurve’s Diverse Spider-Verse Cosplay Fan gathering last night, before the screening of the new film starring Tom Holland.

One of the participants, Jason Goh, 20, travelled from Ipoh to be part of the Spidey fun.

Goh, whose introduction to the superhero was through the 2002 Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire, said he was looking forward to seeing how Holland fared in the role.

“I think he will do a good job because he was good when he appeared in last year’s Captain America: Civil War,” said Goh.

Goh’s Spider-Man costume is based on the one Holland wore in Civil War.

“I had it custom-made, so it fits me perfectly,” he said.

It wasn’t Goh’s first Spider-Man outfit.

“When I was eight years old, I wore a Spider-Man suit to my friend’s party,” he said.

Another participant Ahmad Farabi Zawali, 31, wore the Homecoming Spidey costume complete with a web shooter which he bought online and modified himself. Yesterday was the second time Farabi watched the movie.

“I hope to watch at least another three times,” he said.

“Tom Holland did a great job playing Peter Parker. The other two actors – Maguire and Andrew Garfield – were good too but Holland is closer in age to Peter Parker, who was a teenager when he got his powers.

“The movie has a lot of surprises and new gadgets, which was exciting. I hope all my friends will like the film too,” Farabi said.

Other than Spider-Man, cosplay fans also came as other characters from the Marvel universe including Iron Man and Spider-Gwen.

In the movie, Parker is working out the kinks of being a superhero with the help of Tony Stark/Iron-Man (Robert Downey Jr) while balancing his life as a normal teenager.

The villain, the Vulture, is played by superhero alumnus Michael Keaton.
