KUALA LUMPUR: Police will reclassify the case of T. Nhaveen's death as murder, said Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
His case was initially being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.
"We will be re-classifying the case as murder," the Inspector-General of Police told reporters during an event where Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak joined some 300 policemen to perform Terawih prayers at the Bukit Aman mosque.
He was asked to comment on the death of the teenager on Thursday.
Nhaveen, 18, died at the Penang Hospital at 5.31pm after being savagely beaten by a group of teenagers.
He was found unconscious at around midnight last Saturday at a field in Jalan Kaki Bukit in Bukit Gelugor.
Nhaveen, who was also sodomised and burnt on his back, suffered internal bleeding in his head and abdomen.
Five teenagers have been remanded over the case.
